Spring Crops and Drilling
Do not rush into un-optimal conditions and cause yourself problems! This can cause yield losses, higher weed populations, more cultural work afterwards to alleviate drilling conditions and lower gross margins.
Importance of Optimal Drilling Conditions
It is best to wait for optimal drilling conditions for your crops before rushing in.
Cultivation Strategies for Drilling
Unless needed for aeration, control of green cover or to achieve a good seedbed, shallow cultivations or minimal movement should be aimed for when drilling to reduce bringing up wet soil, disturbing microbial activity in the root zones following cover crops and bringing weed seeds up to the surface.
Managing Weed Populations Before Drilling
If you know you have very bad history of weeds certainly as blackgrass or brome, if the opportunity is there, allow a flush before drilling to reduce the seed return and weed issues in the crop which may would then impact the rest of the rotation.
